Xiami Yeelight Bedside Lamp Review
The Xiaomi Yeelight Bedside Lamp is a slim, cylindrical lamp that aims to be a highly regarded smart gadget, known for its simplistic design and advanced technology. While it offers a helpful glow for late night waking, the unnatural light put forth is detrimental to late night activity.
THE GOOD / Xiaomi Yeelight’s Bedside Lamp is equipped with a rubber, anti-slide bottom to ensure that the lamp does not move around on the table. It is an ideal size for a bedside lamp and is taller than it is wide to ensure space for other items. The Xiaomi Yeelight also has a basic and intriguing design that is compatible with many design concepts.
THE BAD / Inexpensive materials make up the majority of the fragile lamp which hints at the fact that this lamp is not intended for long-term use. The Xiaomi Yeelight is significantly inferior to most smart lamps in terms of the quality of materials used as well as technological characteristics.
THE BOTTOM LINE / The Xiaomi Yeelight Bedside Lamp is a gadget that sounds great in theory but fails to pan out as expected in reality. Its slim body and simplistic design is appropriate for a bedside lamp though it does not provide light that is adequate or recommended for correlating activities. Its technological facet is overrated and as a whole these features lead to more inconveniences than anything else. While it All in all, the Xiaomi Yeelight Bedside Lamp is a poorly made, glorified nightlight with the price tag of a smart lamp.
A tall, plastic cylindrical body and an aluminum base make the Xiaomi Yeelight Bedside Lamp reasonable for placement on bedside tables. At 8.7in tall and 3.9in wide, the Xiaomi Yeelight can be accommodated by even the smallest nightstands while still allowing room for items such as a phone or water bottle to be conveniently located beside it. Weighing only 1.5 pounds, the lamp is also lightweight and slide proof due to a rubber grip on the bottom.
The body of the lamp is frosted white and unadorned, as is the aluminum base aside from a logo on the front. On the top, lies a small white power button in the center of a nearly unnoticeable disc. As the lamp operates and displays numerous colors, the frosted white body of the lamp glows the chosen color. The overall look is the epitome of minimalist design concepts. Because of its simplicity, the Xiaomi Yeelight lamp can be placed in any bedroom without disrupting the flow of the room.
Setup & Packaging
Packaged in a fairly small white box, the Xiaomi Yeelight Beside Lamp is well-protected during transit without being overly wasteful of resources. Caution should be exercised while unwrapping the lamp as the flimsy plastic that makes up the body is shockingly delicate. The same can be said of the cable that is connected to the lamp; it was not crafted with heavy duty materials, therefore it is prone to separating from the device should it be yanked or tripped over.
No assembly is needed to get the lamp in working condition although the plug is flat and for most spaces, this means that an adapter is required. Fortunately, plug adapters are readily available online and are relatively inexpensive. After plugging the lamp in, it will turn on with the physical power button. Unlike many smart devices, however, the Xiaomi lamp does not need a Hub to connect to Wi-Fi. The Xiaomi Yeelight Lamp connects to the Yeelight app for iOS or Android to perform more advanced functions.
A maximum output of 300 lumens further reiterates the fact that this lamp is intended for use as a bedside lamp. The possibility of 16 million colors is enticing but many of these color combinations, including white light, are not recommended for activities commonly associated with bedside lamps, like reading, because of the light’s unnatural hue.
The Xiaomi Yeelight Lamp can be controlled remotely through an app on an iPhone or Android device or using the sensory disc and power button found on the top of the lamp, so long as it is connected via Bluetooth. While this is a noteworthy feature, the lamp does not integrate well with home automation systems. This is a major inconvenience especially considering that the lamp is intended for use in the bedroom where many opt to put down their smart devices well before they fall asleep. The lamp, does however, have a glowing nightlight mode which is useful for late night trips to the bathroom.
